My August race is in the books!
I am eight months in to the year and I set the goal at the first of the year to run a race each month, so far so good!
For the month of August I decided to run the Kirkwood 5K in Greensboro, NC. Madie is beginning her third year at UNCG in Greensboro and her boyfriend's company sponsors this race. I was able to see my Madie, support her boyfriend's company and get my August event checked off!
I had originally planned to run this 5K but then Thursday before the race Madie told me to sign her up too. I knew she planned to walk it with Andrew but when she had me sign her up I decided to do it with her.
At first I thought this was her first 5K but then realized that no she actually organized a team, On Butterfly Wings, and completed her real first 5k in 2010 when she was in 8th Grade.
Madie named her team based on the American Indian Legend:
If anyone desires a wish to come true they must first
capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it.
As a butterfly can make no sound, the butterfly can not reveal
the wish to anyone but the Great Spirit who hears and sees all.
In gratitude for giving the beautiful butterfly freedom,
the Great Spirit will always grant the wish.
So, according to legend, by making a wish and giving the butterfly its freedom,
the wish will be taken to the heavens to be granted.
Madie's Wish On Butterfly Wings is to find a cure for Cancer <3
Her 20th Birthday is this coming Friday and I wont get to see her (long sad sigh).
She has to work Friday and Saturday her boyfriend's fraternity is having a special Saturday "get together" in her honor and I'm not invited... Something about me not being a college kid blah blah blah (lol).
We decided to celebrate her this past weekend instead.
James and I headed to Greensboro Friday night after work. Its about a two hour drive for us so we decided to stay the night before the 5K.
When we got to town we went to the packet pickup at Kirkwood Park.
The race T-Shirts were great and the race swag was a great re-usable grocery bag, some sunglasses a cup and some other miscellaneous goodies!
We then had a delightful Birthday Dinner for Madie at PF Changs Friday night when we got into town then went to pick up her Birthday Present, her new Apple Watch!
Saturday morning I woke up early to grab a coffee and a little breakfast then get into my running clothes.
Madie and Andrew picked me up at the hotel and we headed to the race. We got there pretty early, I wasn't 100% sure what parking and pre-race festivities might be like. This is a community event so it was pretty laid back and we could have gotten there a little later.
I made plans to meet up with Meagan from the Runner Girls Podcast at the event. It was so much fun finally meeting her in person I enjoyed chatting her up about marathon training! Listen to my podcast episode with Meagan here!
The race started with a kids run thas was so stinking cute!!
For the 5K Madie, Andrew and I decided to run the event!!!
Just kidding this "running" lasted 6 seconds, we walked the event!
It was still so much fun! I am not gonna lie I was a little jealous of the runners passing me by but I am so glad I enjoyed the time with these two crazy kids instead!
The route was great it was an out and back that weaved through the Kirkwood Neighborhood. It was well marked and well supported. The Kirkwood 5K raises funds for the community and supports Backpack Beginnings.
We finished the 5K walk in 50 minutes and I had so many laughs along the way! It was such a fun event and we would for sure do this race again!
We met back up with Meagan and then all went and rewarded ourselves with a big breakfast from Herbie's!! James and I headed back home later that afternoon and I already miss my girl!
Next on to the September race(s)!!!! Stay tuned!!
