High Five for Friday

Happy Weekend!!

I am happy it's Friday! Now I just wish it would warm up and stay that way for a while!!

1. I have been able to get in four runs since last Friday!! Running makes me so happy!

2. I had a great run with my little Cocoa! Such a great running partner!

3. We got a lot of necessary work completed on our house(s) this weekend! Progress is being made!

4. We packed up a lot more unused items and made another big donation to a local charitable organization. It always feels good to give!

5. We also ran across an old journal that had belonged to my great aunt. In this excerpt she writes about my Nana, her oldest sister. What a treasure to have re-discovered! I miss them both so much!

Cutest Running Partner Ever!

Saturday morning I decided to head out for a run on our local greenway. It's a wonderful paved trail that runs along side a beautiful river (that we love to kayak in warmer weather). Water really recharges my soul, I love the beach, the lake, rivers, creeks, etc. so running alongside the river is wonderful way for me to get my fix!

When I lace up my shoes my dogs go crazy!! They think it is time to go for a walk and they love any chance to be outside! My dogs are beagles so I do have to keep them on a leash when outside, if they get off the leash they are gone! Slaves to their noses! We live in town so they do not have wide open spaces to run. Snickers has some issues with her hips and she really has slowed down a bit but Cocoa was begging to go with me.

I grabbed her gentle leader and off we went! She was sooooooooo excited!! I wasn't quite sure how she would do though. Remember I only started running this past year so I haven't taken her running before. I had planned an easy three miles but was willing to do less for her if she needed to. I mean look at that face, I'd do just about anything she wanted to do lol!

beagle

She did amazing! We ran out 1.5 miles and took a quick break for her to sniff around and get a drink from the river then turned and ran the 1.5 miles back to the car!

beagle

She is the cutest running partner ever!! I was pretty proud of her!

Beagle

She was ready to get in the car though, lay down and go home ha!
Beagle

When we got home I had a little trouble getting her in the house, oh my... This is after about 5 minutes of rolling around... She cracks me up!

beagle

We will see if she decides to go again with me or not. She could totally rock a doggie 5K... Although a doggie 5K sounds a bit like total chaos lol! I hope she does go with me again, she was fun to run with!

I would love some tips on running with dogs, feel free to share below in the comments!

This Weekend's VIP - LightGuide

So I was heading out the door for one of my morning runs and noticed a light rain was starting to fall. I pulled up my weather app and the radar showed just scattered showers so I thought no biggie and grabbed by rain coat.

Running

One foot out the door and I thought yikes I'm dressed all in black... Black Mountain Hardware rain jacket and black Nike running pants (reflective parts covered by the jacket). It's dark and rainy out and this makes a bad combo!

I quick did a turnabout and ran in to grab my LightGuide

Running in the dark

Running in the dark

This was my first time using it and it was great!! I felt much more comfortable out running in my all black gear! It is very bright! I had my tune belt on one arm and my LightGuide on the other!

Running in the dark

The LightGuide is light weight and has an adjustable Velcro strap. It is made of water resistant nylon with reflective material and LED lights. There are three light modes; fast flash, slow flash and constant light.

I ran this run in the constant light mode and it was great! I was definitely hard to miss!

The LightGuide will only work with you not for you! It will not keep you from running out in front of a car so please continue to be observant on your runs!

This is a great solution for those of you who are like me and enjoy running the early morning dawn! I highly recommend LightGuide!! Happy Running!

High Five for Friday

This week really has flown by! We are looking forward to a somewhat relaxing weekend! We will be working on the house I am sure but other than that we don't have too much going on. Here are some highlights from our week:

1. I hit the pavement 3 out of 5 days this week so far which is better than last week! I was going out this morning but it is pouring rain and thunder and lightning (so weird for February)... Gonna hop on the elliptical instead :) I hope to get in at least one more run this weekend!

2. Got it some good snuggle time with Cocoa. She is the sweetest little dog ever!

3. The snow is melting and the temperatures rising! We are ready for spring!

4. Wedding Planning is coming along! We met this week with the pastor who will marry us!! So exciting!!

5. I was able to spend a few hours in Community Service this week! I have recently joined a local Service League. Volunteering is so rewarding!

Happy Weekend!!

Things are looking up!!

The problem is I am not exactly off to a good start! I am blaming it mostly on the weather... I mean it has been cold and snowy! (Although in part I know the weather is a bit of a scapegoat... I could run in snow couldn't I? Certainly I could bundle up and run in the cold...)
Snowy Steps

I actually also have struggled getting up at my regular 4:30 alarm since Christmas! I think through the holidays I just got off course and I have struggled a little getting back on! Does this say slide to stop alarm or slide to brew the coffee?? Ha! It's so easy to slide to snooze and stay in my warm snugly bed just a little longer...

Snooze Alarm

So far this year I am only at 12 days of running and a total of 32 miles... I need to step it up!
Things are however getting better! I decided this week whether I feel like running or not I am getting up and having coffee. If I choose to sit around for a hour or so before getting ready for my day so be it! I had a sneaking suspicion however that I'd be bored just sitting and probably head on out the door for a run. DING DING DING DING we have a winner folks!! I know myself so well! There actually is no point just being awake and sitting there and indeed I have hit the road!
Wake Up Call
In addition it is looking like the weather will no longer be able to be an excuse for not running! It's warming up!! I think mid 40 temps are perfect!!

I am happy to be getting back into my routine and encourage you, if you are struggling like me, to make a small step in the right direction, some small shift in what you are doing now, there is potential for even the slightest change to have great effect!

2013 in miles

I finally got around to checking my statistics for 2013! I am astonished!

As you may already know I ran my first mile (EVER) in April of 2013. In June I started tracking my runs with Runtastic (best running app EVER).

Between June and December 2013 I ran a total of 254 miles!!

runtastic miles

I ran three 5K's in 2013 and did pretty well in all three!

Race Day

Race Day

Wow!! I would have never put money on that!

I feel so accomplished! Now for 2014... What shall my running goals be??

Goals of course should be SMART

Specific - Run 508 miles in 2014
Measurable - As tracked through Runtastic
Attainable - I have approximately 11 months, I CAN do it!
Realistic/Relevant - This is double my 2013 mileage (Note the mileage reflected for 2013 was for 6 months so this should be a realistic goal)
Time Based - By December 31, 2014!!

There it is!! Now if it will hurry up and warm up I feel certain I can make this happen!!

Bring on the Spring

Gotta Run!

This Weekend's VIP - Pepper Spray! Beware!

Ok so I haven’t exactly used this product, thankfully I haven't had to, but it is a pretty important product to have on hand!

I run generally early in the mornings or later in the evenings and often times I run solo. I always run in well-lit, populated places but you never know where you could run into a situation. Better to be safe than sorry!

I like this particular pepper spray by Blackhawk because it’s PINK and I love all things pink, it’s Made in USA, and it has a great detachable key chain which makes it easy to carry when I need it and easy to leave it in the car when I don’t!

Blackhawk Pepper Spray

In addition it is small and light weight making it easy to carry on my runs!

Blackhawk Pepper Spray

You can pick up this product at just about any sporting good store, Walmart and Amazon also carry it. What ever product you pick you will want to test it out so that you are familiar with how to use it! Most likely, if it is needed, you will want to respond with it quickly so you will want to make sure you know how to activate. I hope I NEVER have to use this product but I do feel safer simply having it on hand :)

High Five for Friday

T.G.I.F. Happy Friday!!

Here are our highlights from the week!

1. We found this super cool picture taken at our house from quite some time ago! I am anxious to find more! I love the history of homes :)

2. James is an amazing grill master! He's an amazing cook in general (yes I know how lucky I am) but he has proven he is also the master of the grill! I am not a big meat eater but he made the most amazing ribs this weekend! SO GOOD! (This is about half way through the process). Smokey Sweet Heat!

3. My oldest daughter made all region cheer!! I am super proud of her!

4. A dear friend made some amazing yummy goodies for us! Yum Yum Yum!! (They didn't last very long in our house...)

5. We have booked our wedding ceremony musicians!!! We are so lucky to have people with such amazing talent perform for our special day! One more thing off the list! We are close to having all major decisions made!

Here's to the weekend!

And it goes on and on... Winter!

So I am sure by now you know that Groundhog Phil, from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, saw his shadow. As legend has it that means we will have a longer winter this year.

I have to admit, I was sort of hoping he wouldn't! I am ready for warmer weather!! I am looking forward to early morning (non freezing) runs, camping, kayaking, bare feet on the dashboard... You get the idea!

According to Phil we better get used to the cold because it's here to stay until well into March! What to do, what to do, while we wait for warm sun-shinny days?

Here are a few of our favorite winter activities to help us get through that we might suggest you give a try:

Snuggle up by the fire

Indulge in warm yummy drinks like hot cocoa and cappuccino

Read a good book

Visit your Nana or your Papa if you can :)

Get together with friends

Bake all sorts of yummy goodness!

Just Dance Party!

Head out for a fun night of snow tubing

Or Ice Skating

And if it snows in your neighborhood

Go Sledding

Kids these days...

Build a Snowman

And when the power goes out:

Enjoy the candleight!

Or go outside, build a fire and feel the warmth of your neighborhood!

Winter really isn't so bad! Enjoy!
