A fun day trip is a visit to Bakers Mountain Park. This park is located in Catawba County, in the Foothills of the NC Mountains. To get here you will take I-40 to exit 121. Head South on Old Shelby Road for about 4.3 miles. Turn left onto Bakers Mountain Road and travel about a mile to the entrance of the park.
This park is owned and operated by the county. Bakers Mountain is the highest elevation in Catawba County and has 6 miles of hiking trails throughout its dense 189 acre forest.
It was a great hike up to the top. It was very steep in sections and the paths were covered with exposed roots, loose rocks and gravel. We definitely got in a good work out hustling up.
There is a beautiful quiet stream along the way.
The view from the top is quite impressive and goes on for miles and miles.
My very favorite part of the hike was discovering the old home sites bordering the trails. I think I could have stayed at these sites for hours pondering the lives of the people that lived in these homes, wondering what happened that made them wither away and imagine the warmth that these hearths provided on those blustery cold winter nights.
Bakers Mountain Park is a great location for a day hike if you are in the western NC Foothills. In addition to the hike and homes there are picnic areas to enjoy, lots of wildlife to watch, beautiful hardwoods and unique plant life to see. If you are in the area stop by Bakers Mountain Park for a visit!
